We love recycling at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. We also love partnering with like-minded organizations. That’s why Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is proud to partner with the MeadWestvaco Foundation, supporting sponsor of Butterflies LIVE! and also our composting partner. The MWV Foundation is working with Natural Organic Process Enterprises (NOPE) to enrich the soil at the Community Kitchen Garden by donating nutrient-rich compost made from food scraps from MWV’s cafeteria.
In June, Natural Organic Process Enterprises (NOPE), a commercial organics hauler based in Richmond, became the first organics recycling collection service in the nation to achieve B Corp certification. B Corp certification is a third party assessment carried out by the nonprofit organization B Lab, which evaluates companies using a number of criterion on their ability to solve social and environmental issues.
Food scrap recycling and composting today helps create a Sustainable Tomorrow, and that’s just what Richmond International Raceway is doing as part of the NASCAR Race to Green™ program. In an effort to reduce food waste, RIR is launching a partnership with Sustainable America and Natural Organic Process Enterprises (NOPE) to divert back-of-house food waste on race weekends.
Chip Hall spent 25 years working in the garbage industry before he took a chance on a different branch of the waste business: composting. The idea was to get organizations like big corporations, universities and hospital systems, to pay to have their food waste picked up and hauled away to be made into compost.
A small but growing number of Richmond-area companies have adopted a type of business structure that emphasizes social causes and the environment as much as making a profit. They are called B Corporations. They are companies that, in a twist on the conventional idea that a business exists simply to maximize its profits, amend their governing documents and declare themselves to have a mission that goes beyond profits.
The State of Virginia is the newest to form a regional group to promote the compost manufacturing industry under the umbrella of the US Composting Council, the group announced today. Their goal is joining the forces of compost manufacturers, municipal managers and collectors of organics, as well as researchers and other allies including users of compost for Virginia projects, said Ken Bannister of Draper Aden Associates, current President of the group.
