B Corporations are a new kind of company which uses the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. There are currently over currently over 2000 Certified B Corporations worldwide from more than 60 industries in 32 countries with 1 unifying goal – to redefine success in business.
B Corps are important because they inspire all businesses to compete not only to be the best in the world, but to be the best for the world. Certified B Corporations meet higher standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. It’s like Fair Trade certification but for the whole business, not just a bag of coffee (or USDA Organic certification, but not just for a carton of milk; or LEED certification, but not just for a building).
The performance standards are comprehensive and transparent. They measure a company’s impact on all its stakeholders (e.g. workers, suppliers, community, and the environment).
Unlike traditional corporations, Certified B Corporations are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions not only on their shareholders, but also on their stakeholders (e.g., workers, suppliers, community, consumers, and the environment).
With so many choices in the world today we all need tools to help us to make the best possible choices. To us, being B Corp Certified means that our partners can count on us to stay committed to our mission which is education, sustainability & conservation. We feel that being a Certified B Corp gives us a platform for maximum impact. We want to be part of the solution and not part of the problem.
Formed in 2009 Natural Organic Process Enterprises (NOPE) has established itself within a niche of the recycling industry. They aspire to promote composting in an effective and educational way to engage their local communities to be more sustainable. They feel that food scraps and the other organic components to the waste stream should be considered a natural resource that can be conserved through composting. A key component to their business model has been to “close the loop” through their Compost Credit Program.
NOPE is a proud member of the US Composting Council and the Virginia Compost Council. They have spent years developing Best Managed Practices (BMP’s) through research as well as trial and error. NOPE prides itself as being local, responsive, & engaged with their partners. Their partners include large institutions as well as small sustainable minded local businesses. They believe that that the myriad of small environmental benefits of composting add up to significant environmental & social benefits.
Through their Compost Credit program they have functionally closed the loop of organic recycling or composting as it is more commonly known. They have returned premium compost for use in school & local community gardens in their service area. Some of their clients have choose to donate their accrued credits to local nonprofits and agricultural related charities.
NOPE see’s Virginia as a place that is becoming more & more enlightened as to effective resource management. Compost is generally recognized for its use in sustainable agriculture but many people over look its other applications. It can be used for many things such as storm water runoff management as well as erosion control. With the multitude of water ways & tributaries that exist here in Virginia there are many opportunities that exist for its use. We hope to be a part of a collaborative community effort here in Virginia to make a gradual culture change to include composting as part of what we do as a community to promote a more sustainable Commonwealth.
